Joe Toben, age 10, of Lowell, Mass., for his question:
WHO WAS POP WARNER?
For 47 years, Pop Warner was one of the greatest college football coaches in the United States. His full name was Glenn Scobey Warner and he was born in Springville, N.Y., in 1871. He died in 1954 at the age of 83.
After graduating from Cornell University and becoming a lawyer, Warner gave up his law practice in 1895 to coach at Iowa State College. He went on to coach at such schools as the University of Georgia, Cornell University, University of Pittsburgh, Stanford University and Temple University.
Between some of these assignments he coached the Carlisle Indian Industrial School from 1904 to 1906. At this school he coached Jim Thorpe, an athlete who was considered to be one of the greatest football players of all time.
Warner originated the single and double wingback formations.
He was advisory coach at California's San Jose State College in 1945 when he retired.
