Tom Flynt, age 13, of New Bedford, Mass., for his question:
WHAT IS A FALLOW DEER?
A fallow deer is a medium sized deer that can be found living in the wilds in western Asia and southern Europe. It stands about three feet high at the shoulder and has antlers.
The handsome fallow deer, which can also be found in many of the world's zoos, received its name from its color. The word "fallow" means pale yellow, and that's the animal's color. In the summer it picks up hundreds of white dots on its back and sides.
In Iran and northern Africa a larger species of the fallow deer can be found. Its color is a bit brighter than the Asian type. This type has been domesticated in Great Britain and can be found in private parks.
The males and females live apart except during the October mating season. The following the female will give birth to one fawn, or, occasionally, twins or triplets.
