Welcome to You Ask Andy

Peter Vickers, age 16, of Freeport, I11., for his question:

IS ARMS CONTROL SOMETHING NEW?

You may think that attempts to work out international arms control is something found only in recent history. Actually, the first formal attempt to limit the scope of war came from a group called the Almphictyonic League back in about 700 B.C. The organization was made up of most of the Greek tribes.

These league members pledged themself to restrain their action in war against other members. Violation of the code could result in heavy fines.

Because arms technology didn't advance much from about 300 B.C. until the Middle Ages, few attempts were made during this period to control the spread of war tools.

Many utopian plans to abolish war were outlined after the Thirty Years' War in 1648. Also there were serious efforts made to reduce or limit the arsenals of nations.

Modern day efforts for arms control are being made by the major powers of the world as well as units in the United Nations.
