Gary Siacco, age 9, of Mt. Prospect, I11., for his question:
HOW FAST DOES A QUASAR MOVE?
A quasar is a galaxy that gives off large amounts of energy from its central area. They radiate this energy in the form of light and radio waves.
Some quasars are near the edge of the universe. It takes light, which travels 186,282 miles per second, about 10 billion years to travel from such quasars to the earth. Now, that's a long distance away!
Scientists tell us that quasars are moving away from the earth
Many have huge red shifts which suggest that they move at more than 80 percent the speed of light. Now, that's really moving fastl
The red shift is a change in the light of a cosmic object toward he longer, or red, wave lengths of the object's color pattern or spectrum.
