Steve Holcombe, age 10, of, Columbus, Ohio, for his question:
WHEN DID JOHNNY APPLESEED LIVE?
Johnny Appleseed was a frontiersman who lived during the time of the westward movement in America. Born in Massachusetts in 1774 with the name of John Chapman, he later earned his new name because he started many apple orchards across Ohio and Indiana.
Johnny moved west when he was a young man. He floated down the Ohio River in 1800 on a raft loaded with apples. Wherever he went, he planted the seeds of his apples.
Later Johnny went from orchard to orchard, often several hundred miles apart, to trim the trees. He always carried sacks of seeds with him, as well as small trees in pots. He sold his trees to settlers for one cent each. If a settler didn't have any money, Johnny would give him s tree free of charge.
Johnny had a wonderful reputation. All the people in the area, including the Indians, appreciated his gentleness and kindness. He would often read to them from his Bible.
