Where do we get indigo?

Before the Age of Science, the beautiful blue dye called indigo was taken from certain plants  The dye is not formed in the plants  It forms as certain plant chemicals decay  The ancient Celts made indigo from a weedy plant called woad

Better brands of indigo were made from a family of plants which grew in warmer climates  In the old days, indigo came from India, Africa, the Middle East and China, Australia, too, has an indigo plant, Nowadays, almost all our indigo is made from chemicals  It is a synthetic, man‑made substance, often made from aromatic amino compounds
