Who was Ferdinand Magellan?

By many people, Magellan is rated as the greatest mariner that ever the seas.  In his early days he visited many far countries as a soldier for Portugal, He traveled eastward to the East Indies  Later, in the service of Spain he set forth in command of five ships and 240 men towards the west and the New World  Threw years later, one of the ships and 1? of the men returned  They were the first to circumnavigate the globe, to sail clear around the world and prove it round 

Magellan manned this voyage, but dad not live to complete it  Along the route, he discovered the straits of Magellan, named in his honor He named the Pacific Ocean because its waters seemed so calm after the stormy journey around South America, Magellan was born in Portugal and died in the year 1521 at the age of 41  Has former voyages had token him as far west as the Philippines, where he died  So Magellan actually did sail clear around the world during his lifetime
