Where does the name Canada come from?
Each discoverer of this lovely land gave it a different name, We are not sure what the bold Viking, Leif Erickson, called it when he landed on its eastern shores a thousand years ago When John Cabot landed on Cape Breton he named it Baccalaos, from the Basque word for codfish which were so abundant in the surrounding waters
Nova Scotia was first named Acadia and the Hudson Bay region was called Rupert Land Early French explorers named it New Francs, Meantime, strong settlements were growing around the Gulf of the mighty St, Lawrence River These settlers called the whole wide land Canada, from the name of an Indian settlement in the region
