Which bird hiberates the farthest?
So far as we know, the worlds champion in this field is the Arctic tern. He is a small, swallow‑tailed fellow, as pretty as a picture. His sleek plumage is soft blue‑grey and white, accented with a red bill and a pair of red feet. His nesting grounds are far to the north and often inside the Arctic Circle. When winter comes to the northern hemisphere, he takes off with his family to islands around Antarctica, a journey of perhaps 11,000 miles.
Each year of his life, the Arctic tern may fly 22,000 miles back and forth between his winter and summer homes. This makes him the champion distance flyer of the migrating birds ‑ and from his red bill to the tapering tips of his tail, the sturdy little champ is only seven inches long.
