Where is the Collosus of Rhodes?
For almost a thousand years, the ruins of this famous statue lay scattered on the ground. Then, in the year 656 A.1?., what remained of it was sold as scrap metal and toted away. The bronze figure of Helios, Greek god of the sun, is estimated to have been about 105 feet tall and it stood on its pedestal for only 56 years. So impressive was the ancient
Collosus, that it was named one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Rhodes is a small Greek island in the Aegean sea. In ancient times, the city of Rhodes at the northern tip of the island was a busy trading center. The Collosus was erected by the city merchants in the year
280 B.C. ‑ and felled by an earthquake in 224 B.C. Some say the legs of the great statue straddled the harbor, but this is almost certainly an exaggeration. The gleaming bronze wonder most likely stood on one side of the harbor.
