Welcome to You Ask Andy

Jane Sullivan, age 9,

How do birds know where to migrate?

We know a great deal about the birds, what they eat and how they build their nests, We know where and when most of them migrate, We know these things and the birds know them too. But we have no idea how the charming creatures come by their strange and wonderful knowledge.

No one can tell you how a bird knows where or when to migrate. Some people explain this by saying that they know by instinct. But what is instinct? Andy says that it is the voice of Mother Nature telling them what to do for their own safety and, like sensible darlings, they obey.
