Welcome to You Ask Andy

Robert Bishop, age 8, of Ottawa, for is question:

Do stones grow?

Stones are made from the countless different minerals of the earths crust. These building materials have been there ever since the old earth settled down into a solid shape billions of years ago. All this time, however, the wind and the weather have been busy making and remaking the basic materials into different rocks and stones. Volcanoes have poured forth lava rocks. The pounding seas, the running rivers and the 'changing seasons have been busy breaking big rocks into boulders and gravelly stones.

Sometimes masses of small stones are cemented together again into big slabs. Rocks do not grow, like living things. But they are forever being changed, very slowly, from big rocks to little rocks, from little rocks to big rocks.
