What is a pharos?
Pharos was originally the name of a small island dust off the coast of North Africa. Alexander the Great had a causeway built from the island to the city of Alexandria on the mainland. He planned to put a tall building on the island and top it with a blazing beacon but the young conqueror did not live to carry out this idea.
The building was started later • and for a thousand years its bright beacon guided ships in and out of the harbor of Alexandria. The splendid building was white marbles one tier upon another, tapering up to the beacon which was some 400 feet above the harbor. It was named for the island on which it stood, which is why the first lighthouse came to be called a pharos.
