How big is an atom?

Some years ago, the scientists said sadly that the tiny atom could never be seen. Then the field ion microscope was invented. It can magnify two million times and show the tiny atoms frown which all substances are made, It is estimated that about one hundred million average sized atoms standing shoulder to shoulder measure one inch.

The field ion microscope can show how atoms and clusters of atoms are arranged in solid minerals. The tiny atoms, magnified more than a million times, look like blurred points of light arranged in beautiful designs.
