They were called Gypsies because they and most other people thought they came from Egypt. But most scholars disagree with this and the charming Gypsies have been wandering so long that they have forgotten their homeland.
The Gypsy language could be related to a language of faraway India and the handsome Gypsies themselves somewhat resemble the people of India. Some experts think that, in the remote past, they left the Indus Valley region, perhaps because of famine or overcrowding. They never settled in a new home and in time wandering became their way of life.
