Was the earth ever smaller?

We do not know for sure whether the earth is shrinking or stretching. But we do know that tons of new material from space are added every year. This is the dust and ashes, stones and motals which fall from meteors. It is estimated that a ton of pebble sized meteorites falls on North America every year   and this has been happening for ages.

In a year, about four ounces of dust and ashes from so called shooting stars sift down onto every square mile. In 5,000 million years, the earth adds meterorite material equal to a one inch layer.
