The limestone hills of southeastern New Mexico were formed under an ancient sea, Some 60 million years age, the land rose and the restless waters carved out several layers of caves. One pit has been explored to 1,100 feet below the surface. But we do not know the full extent of the vast system of caves,

The caverns are open to the public on two levels and some 700 acres have been safe for visitors in guided tours. One of the caverns is 4,000 feet long and 625 feet wide with a towering ceiling 285 feet high,
