The weather was one of the large items to be studied when the old earth was given a complete physical examination during the IGY. A great deal of new material was discovered, and the most shattering fact revealed how much we do not yet know about our world. Weather studies are being continued and data are being sent down from aloft by orbiting satellites and one day this tiresome detail may give us all the answers.

As to tornadoes, we know that they occur where conflicting air masses are explosive enough to erupt into violent warfare. Such an area of instability exists in the stormy squall lines which run ahead of a vast, cold weather front. Conflicting winds, temperature and moisture cause a squall line of thunderstorms and in certain areas a brood of furious tornadoes also hatches in these turbulent weather conditions.
