Welcome to You Ask Andy

Maybe you thought that you hear with those pretty, pink shell like ears on the sides of your hoado Not at all. They are merely sounding boards to trap the sounds and send them through little tunnels to the inner ears which are buried safely within the bones of your skull. These inner ears do the real job of hearing sounds and sending messages about them to the brain. Many animals do not have outer ears at all. But they manage to hear very well without them because they too have inner ears buried in their heads.

The true seal has no outer ears. The tunnels which lead to his inner ears are covered with skin and fur. Birds have no outer ears. The inner tunnels which lead to their hard working/ears are covered with skin and feathers.
