Welcome to You Ask Andy

Brenda morgan, age 13, of york county, N.b., canada, for her question:

Where does the day begin ?

Each calendar day is equal to the time it takes the earth to spin once around its Axis. Night and day follow each other around the g1obe, but there is no natural mark to divide one day from the next. So people had to decide on a place where each calendar day should begin. They chose a line from pole to pole down the lonely Mid pacific ocean.

We call it the international date line. Each calendar morning begins at the date line and takes 24 hours to creep around the g1obe. It greets us from the east, while in the meantime a new day is born. On the west side of the date line it is already Tuesday, while we are still enjoying Monday.
