Welcome to You Ask Andy

Henry Mason, age 13, ofNewport news, Va., for his question;

Was the moon ever a part of the Earth?

Scientists are not certain of the Early history of our moon. They have suggested several theories, but a theory is merely an educated guess until it has been proved. Until recently, most experts suspected that the moon was once part of the Earth. It was perhaps wrenched from the bed of the Pacific ocean when our world was young and more plastic.

A newer theory suggests that the moon and the Earth were never one. The moon may have been a passing planet or planetoid which became trapped by the gravity of the Earth. But so far, we have not enough facts to prove either of these theories.
