Welcome to You Ask Andy

Bradley Hines, age 11, of Gary, Ind., for his question:

Does the sun have an orbit?

Everything in the heavens, it seems, is on the move. The moon orbits the Earth, And the Earth orbits the sun, and the sun takes its family of planets on a gigantic Orbit around the starry galaxy. The sun travels its orbit through the heavens at An average speed of 170 miles a second. This is more than half a million miles an hour. At this fabulous speed, you would think that the sun revolves around its orbit in no time at all. Actually, one revolution takes about 200 million years. The Sun's vast orbit around the pinwheel galaxy is called the cosmic year.
