Welcome to You Ask Andy

Do the asteroids have their own orbits?

The asteroids, thousands of them, swing around the sun like a swarm of golden bees. Each travels acts own orbit at its own speed and most of them swoop around the Solar System between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. A heavenly body which travels its own orbital path around the sun can rightfully be called a planet,

We think of a planet: however, as a sizeable body and. the asteroids are smaller, most of them much smaller, than the moons which orbit the planets. We overcome this problem of rank in the Solar System by calling the asteroids the planetoids   which means the little planets.
