Exactly how far is the earth from the sun?

The earth’s orbit is not quite a perfect circle. In January it is about three million miles closer to the sun than it is in July. The average distance of the earth from the sun is the distance it would be all year round if these differences could be evened out. And the best of experts are still busy trying to find the exact figure for this distance.

A few years ago, scientists were fairly sure that the average distance of the earth from the sun was 93,005,000 miles. Then some more checking and measuring was done and this figure was scrapped. Experts now think that the average distance of the earth from the sunn is 92,900,000 miles.
