Welcome to You Ask Andy

Is there any fresh water in the Atlantic?

Some of the chemicals in the salty sea are harmful and no sensible person would take a drink of ocean water. But there are a few puddles and even streams of fresh water in the ocean, if you know where and when to look. An iceberg is made from snow and snow is as fresh as rain water. Huge chunks of ice drift down from the Arctic into the North Atlantic, melting as they go. These zcebergs are surrounded with chilly, fresh water, but it soon merges with the salty water of the sea.

If a river is big enough, it can sweep a current of fresh water far out into the salty ocean. The Amazon, which empties into the Atlantic at the equator, is such a river. Its current of fresh water sometimes sweeps more than 100 miles into the salty sea.
