What animals cut down trees?

The busiest lumberman of the animal world is the beaver. He is very skilled at cutting down trees and slicing them into logs to build his dams and his waterproof house. Other animals destroy trees without making such good use of them.

A tree needs its overcoat of bark and whey. this is damaged seriau sly, the tree may wither away and perish. A tree also needs a system of sturdy roots to support its lofty trunk and to feed it moisture from the soil. When the roots are damaged seriously, the tree may topple or perish from thirst. Many forest trees are destroyed by porcupines and other bark nibbling animals. Many young trees come to an early end because gophers and other burrowing vegetarians dine on their tender roots.
