Where does mistletoe grow?
This pale green parasite plant is a native of the earths temperate regions. It depends upon the oak, the apple and many other trees that lose their leaves during the winter season. The seeds of the mistletoe are inside the waxy white berries. They are carried by birds who eat the berries and perch high in the branches of the host trees. A lucky seed will lodge in a crack of bark and grow roots down into the wood of the host tree to feed upon its sap.
Though we call the mistletoe a parasite, we are not certain that this is entirely true. The airy, clinging plant certainly takes its liquid from the sap of the host tree, but some of its food may be manufactured in its pale, fleshy leaves which stay green all winter.
