Welcome to You Ask Andy

How close to the sun is Mercury?

the planet Mercury, you might say, is the baby of the planet family and you would expect it to be closest to the parent sun. And so it is. However, its orbit is more oval shaped and there are times when the baby of the planets is much nearer to the sun than others. When closest, Mercury is 28,750,000 miles from the sun. Its greatest distance is 43,750,000 miles.

Mercury whizzes around the sun almost twice as fast as the earth and its yearly orbit takes 88 earth days. Though it swings nearer and farther from the sun, we can give its average distance. The average distance of Mercury from the sun is about 36 million miles   which is about 57 million miles closer to the sun than we are.
