Where are the Magellanic Clouds?

Two fuzzy clouds car be seen in the night sky south of the eq.ator. They look somewhat like pale islands fallen from the Milky Way and one of them is so pale that it becomes lost in the dazzle of the full moon. These Clouds of Magellan are star systems outside the Milky Way system of stars and much closer to us than any of the other big galaxies. Some astronomers have suggested that the Clouds of Magellan are somewhat like starry satellites of our galaxy. They may be just what they seem to be, starry islands broken off from the pale Milky Way which loops over our skies.
