Ann Wood, Age 12, Sarasota, Florida, for her question:
Is there an up and a down in space?
On earth we point at the sky to find the up direction but remember we live on a globe. Standing on the opposite side of the earth the up direction points in the opposite direction. Out in the vast ocean of space a ship or a rocket is far from the convenient up and down directions we use on the face of our earth.A traveling space ship, however, would need directions to follow its route. Those directions would not be the same as those we use on earth. Out there, up and down, north and south, east and west might be very different from those directions we use on the face of our round globe.
