Joan Whitney, age 13, of Avon, New York, or her question:
Who owns the UN building?
Its gleaming glass walls stand there beside the East River of New York City. It is a splendid monument to peace and understanding among the rather quarrelsome nations of mankind and it is also a busy building where the necessary work is done to attain this natural ideal. Our government worked hard to have this towering building in our country and we are proudly grateful to have it here.
The land on which it stands eras donated by John D. Rockefeller,Jr. and surrounding plots for the UN Plaza were donated by New York City. The bright building was paid. for by the member nations of the UN with an interest free loan from our country and was paid back by 1982. The noble building with its 18 acres of ground belongs, as it should, to the member nations of the UN. We just happen to be the lucky country on which it stands.
