Vivian Freeman, age 12, of Newman, Georgia, and Sandra Potts, age 12, of Pittsburgh, Penna., for their question:
Do fish ever sleep?
You will never catch a goldfish napping. He may hover now and again and seem to rest for a short spell, but his glassy eye ; will never close. He never sleeps as we do, neither do the fish that live in the rivers, lakes and oceans. Day and night they move restlessly through the water, opening and closing their fishy mouths.
The ocean fishes are often more active at night. After sunset, great schools of herring and mackerel start to swim with all their might. For then they are in greater danger from the sharks and other hungry enemies. Their safety lies in speed, restless speed, with no time to sleep.
