Maria Lang, age l4, of Gaston, S.C for her question:
How can they measure the wind day and night?
An old. time weather vane shows the direction of the wind. But when you wait this information you must look at the weather vane, ranch as you must look at a clock to tell the time. More up .to date instruments tell the direction and also the speed or force of the wind. Some of these wind instruments are fixed to gadgets which record day and night.
The motions of such a wind instrument are conveyed to a movable needle. The tip of the needle touches a drum which revolves with a clock. A roll of graph paper is fixed around the drum and day and night the needle records information from the wind instrument. A meteorologist can read a continuous record of wind speed and direction for the past day and night.
