Welcome to You Ask Andy

Beverly Pukara, Age 10, Of Globe, Ariz.., For her question:

What makes the moon shine?

It sounds silly to say that the sun makes the moon shine. But this is true. The sun shines on the moon. And some of this sunlight shines down on the earth. The moon shines with reflected glory from the sun, and we can see only the part of the moon which is bathed in sunshine. A day on the moon lasts two weeks; then comes two weeks of night.

The moon is a round ball, and one side always faces the earth. In a month, we watch a day and a night steal across our side of the moon. Since we see only the part lit with sunshine., the moon seems to change its shape. At full moon, our side of the moon is all in daylight.
