Welcome to You Ask Andy

Roxanne Randle, Age 8, Of Lancaster, Penna., For Her Question:

How was grand canyon formed?

Grand canyon was dug into the earth by the busy colorado river. The job began scme 50 million years ago. The western mountains were just beginning to grow, and the river flowed down a gent1e slope. Slowly, through the ages, the ground rose higher. The river kept to its old path, and its swift waters washed away the rising ground. Its banks became steeper as the river dug deeper and deeper into earth.

Today, grand canyon is a mile deep and some eight miles wide at the top. You stand on the rim and look down at the busy river a mile below. The walls of the canyon are terraces that look like giant steps of rainbow colored rocks.
