Welcome to You Ask Andy

He1en Burros, Age 9, Of Portland, Ore., For her question:

Does a hummingbird sing?

When a dainty hummingbird comes close, we hear a purring, whirring sound. This soft hum comes from the little bird's wings which beat the air so fast that we see them only as a faint blur. His feathers glow like jewe1s; and if he were bigger, the hummer would rival the peacock. But the pretty little creature is not a song bird.

The hummer has a voice  but he does not use it to sing a song. He can make a squeaky noise which might remind you of a frightened mouse. The hummer is a bold little fellow, but once in a while he is startled or scared. If he accidentally flies too near you, he may squeak squeak squeak, and his little voice may sound scared or a little angry.
