Larry Tuttle, Age 12, Of Winston Salem, N,C „ for his question:
What is the approximate perimeter of the pacific?
The vast pacific covers almost half our planet, and you can see from your gift globe the problem involved in estimating its perimeter for it is not bordered by a continuous shoreline, its eastern shore weaves perhaps 10,000 miles from alaska to cape horn. Its western shore borders asia, part of Australia and a jigsaw of ocean islands,
The north pacific merges with the arctic, and the south pacific merges with the waters that circle antarctica, its waters, then, are open to the other oceans of the world. It is impossible to define the borders of the pacific or any ocean, because all their waters merge in one world ocean.
