Welcome to You Ask Andy

Terry Stanley, Age 10,, Of FayettevilleyW, Va.,, for his question:

What is the equinox?

The word equinox means equal night. but it would be just as accurate to call it a period. Of equal day. It is a time of the year when day and night are of equal length all over the world. At the equator, the days and nights are the sane length all through the year. But in the rest of the world, the length of the days changes with the seasons.

North of the equator, we have our longer days in the summer months while, south of the equator, they are having the short days of winter. Twice a year.. as the seasons change aroundt day and night are equal both north and south of the equator, the spring equinox occurs on March 21, and the fall equinox occurs on Sept. 22.
