Jackie Rice, Age 9, Of East Orange, N.J.., For her question:
Is it true that the Pacific is deeper than the Atlantic?
The floor of the ocean is uneven, like the surface of the dry land. There are hills and deep ditches that reach down into the earth's crust. For this reason, we can only give the average depth of the world's oceans. This is how deep the water would be if the ocean floors were flat and smooth.
The average depth of the pacific ocean is 14,048 feet. The average depth of the atlantic ocean is 12,880 feet. The pacific ocean has an average depth of a little more than two and a half rlues. The Atlantic Ocean has an average depth of a little less than two and a quarter miles. The Pacific Ocean, then, is a little more than a quarter mile deeper than the Atlantic.
