Did the Greeks invent democracy?

The word democracy is coined from Greek words, and its exact meaning is rule by the people. It is, of course, a system of government which aims to let people govern themselves. Naturally, it is impossible to make laws which please every person, so democracy is actually 90verment by the majority of the people which cast their votes at the polls.

The thoughtful people of ancient Greece were very interested in government. They aimed at fairness for all citizens, and certainly a form of democracy was born in their city states. In 400 BC., every citizen of Athens had the right to vote.
