Welcome to You Ask Andy

Laurie Hoffman., age 9, Of Rochester, N.Y. for her question:

How much does the sun weigh?

The sun is more than a million times bigger than our little earth. You might expect it to weigh a million times more than our world, but it doe6 not. Its weight is about 333,000 times more than the weight of the world. Eperts call the weight of a heavenly body its mass, which means the amount of material stuffed into it. Weight depends upon gravity which is different in different places. Mass is always the same.

The mass of the earth in tons is about 6.580 sextillion. This figure is 61580 followed by 18 zeros. The mass of the sun in tons is this huge figure multiplied by 333,000. In round figures, this is 2,270 followed by 24 zeros, which is roughly the mass or weight of the sun.
