Lloyd Bashkeu, Age 11, Of Bridgeport, Conn., for his question:
What is the origin of the word olympic?
Mount Olympus is the tallest peak in Greece. It rises 9550 feet above sea leve1, and its lofty shoulders are often crowned with snow and shrouded with fog. The Greeks of ancient days were filled with awe at the appearance and disappearance of their tall mountain. Surely, they thought, it must be the home of the gods and goddebbes.
And so, to the Greeks, Mount Olympus become the home of the gods, and a god like person or deed was called olympian. The Greeks thought highly of physical culture and organized tests of athletic skills. Athletes to the Greeks seemed god like, and so it seemed natural to name their great contest the Olympic games.
