Larry Anderson, Age 12, Of Clearwater, Neb.., for his question:
What are the ungulate animals?
The word ungulate is coined from an older word meaning a nail or hoof. The ungulates form a large group of animals which trot around the world on hooved feet. It includes our cattle, the deer and the graceful antelopes. Horses, too, are ungulates; so are the pigs and the rhinos. The elephant is also classed as an ungulate.
Most ungulates are vegetarians., and many of them chew their cud. But the big type ungulates eat both meat and vegetables. Many ungulates have horns or antlers, but the elephants and the horses do not. All ungulates are mammal animals that give birth to live babies.
