Joe Howard, age 12, of Gary, Ind... For his question:
What is a glaciologist?
There is not much, you might think, to learn about a glacier; and when you have studied one, you know about all. Of them. But this is not so. All glaciers move at different speeds and in different directions. It is important that we know what the great ice fields are doing, for they give birth to icebergs and help to brew up stormy gales.
A glaciologist is an expert who makes a study of the world's glaciers and ice fields. A mountain glacier may slide down a s1ope several feet a day. The rile of an ice field may move an inch a day. The glaciologist measures the depth of the frozen ice, where and how fast it is traveling. Glaciologists are still busy 'measuring the Antarctic ice fields and estimating what thebe frozen wastes mean to the seas and perhaps to the world's weather.
