Megan H. Moret, Age 9, Of Superior, Neb.., for his question:
How fast does the world turn?
The world spins around on its axis, which is a line through the middle from pole to pole. It takes about four minutes less than 24 hours to make one complete turn around. But the world is a round globe all turning around together. Some places must turn faster than others.
The globe is widest at the equator, which is a line around the world's wait half way between the two poles. This big circle must turn the fastest. A spot on the equator spins around at about 1000 miles an hour. Halfway between the equator and the north pole, the globe has to spin around a sma11er circle. It spins at about 500 miles an hour. Near the north pole, the circles get smaller, and at the exact pole, the ground does not spin around at all.
