Marshall L. Browning, age 11, of Columbia, S. C., for his question:
Why do we want to land on the moon?
Almost everybody has a good reason for wanting to go to the moon. Geologists and other scientists want to study minerals and the formations on the lunar landscape. Astronomers want to set up telescopes where they are not blurred by an atmosphere, as they are on earth. To gain these advantages, science needs on the spot investigation of the moon.
There is another reason, perhaps a better one Man is a dreamer and his dreams lead to progress. For ages, man has dreamed of going to the moon. So we must go, if only to encourage ourselves to keep on dreaming and advancing toward new adventures. It is by reaching out to new frontiers that our body of knowledge grows. Many inventions and products result by harnessing our collective minds in designing the vehicles that make a trip to the moon possible.
