Karen Gibling, age 10, of Ottawa, Ont., Canada, For her question:
Can Greenland be called a continent?
Greenland is not large enough to rate with the six great continents Of the earth. The small est of the continents is Australia, and this whopping island of the southern seas covers an area of almost 3 million square mils. Greenland covers an area of 840,000 square miles. If it were three times larger, perhaps we would call it a continent.
Australia is rated as a continent and an island. Greenland is rated merely as an island and a part of the continent of Europe. However, this ice capped island of the far north rates as the second largest island in the world. And it is the largest island which is not also a continent.
