Is it true that opal is an unlucky stone?

Opals are very beautiful stones, sometimes lovelier than rubies and emeralds some look like frozen moonbeams, shining softly with buried blues and palest pinks. Some are rich with deeper colors that look like frozen flames. It is not at all unlucky to gaze at these lovely stones. In fact, you are lucky when you get a chance to admire beautiful opals

You are even luckier if you happen to own one. Most opals are rated as semi precious stones which means they are not as valuable as precious emeralds and diamonds. But some of the rare, vivid opals are very valuable indeed. It is unfair to say that these lovely stones are unlucky, for it just is not true:
