Paul Burros, Age 8, Of Portland, Ore., for his question:
Was the statue of liberty built on Liberty Island?
Our everyday lives are filled with a wondrous array of things made right here in America. But our statue of liberty that stands so proudly on Liberty Island in New York harbor was made in Paris, France. Miss liberty was created by Frederic Bartholdi, the famous French architect who built the Eiffel Tower of Paris.
When the great statue was finished, it was taken apart and put carefully into 214 packing cases. The precious packages were loaded onto a ship, and they arrived in New York In June, 1885. Meantime a suitable pedestal had been built on what is now Liberty Island. All the pieces of the statue were put back together, and Miss Liberty was ready to lift her shining torch on Oct. 28, 1886.
