Welcome to You Ask Andy

Cynthia Dott, age 11, of Albany, N.Y., For her question:

What is epsom salt?

Epsom is the name of a famous, old english spa where peop1e go to enjoy the waters of mineral springs. This particular water from deep in the earth's crust seemed to be imbued with all sorts of qualities. Peop1e who bathed in it claimed that their skins became soft and smooth. They also claimed that it drove away many of their vague aches and pains, though this was probably wishful thinking. Those who drank it, however, could prove its laxative qualities.

Magnesium sulfate is the chemical na me for the mineral salt in the waters of epsom. On rare occasions We may use it in small doses as a laxative. We can dump it in large scoopfuls into the tub and enjoy a spa type mineral bath. Most of our epsom salt is a by product that occurs, of all things from the manufacture of soda pop.
